altora

A one-page site for a fictional balloon-capsule flight company, "Altora — Leave the ground gently": six hours above the clouds, no rockets, no training. A countdown opens a square porthole on the sky, and the camera tilts down onto a passenger's face as the hero writes itself in, with blurred display type that sharpens from left to right. Scrolling plays the flight as one 285-frame film on a canvas: the camera tilts up into the sky, which darkens from blue to ink while stars appear, and climbs until the Earth's curve rises. A HUD of turning rings and pixel-type labels marks the troposphere, the stratosphere and the peak, and the bottom bar counts the altitude up to 30 000 m. Then a window opens from the centre onto the capsule cabin. The screen goes black and a sunrise wipes the edge-of-space view open from the sun. A re-entry flash pulls focus onto her face back on the desert while the altitude counts down to zero. Cabin, sunrise and landing are short looping videos that play only while on screen. The footer is a slowly turning Earth behind a reserve-a-seat form, with a giant wordmark rising from below. Includes smooth scrolling, a full-screen menu, generated ambient sound (Web Audio, no audio files) that follows the altitude, film grain, pointer parallax and a phone layout.
